CWA, IBEW MEMBERS GIVE LEADERS STRIKE AUTHORIZATION AT BELL ATLANTIC
WASHINGTON, July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) announced today that the unions' members have authorized a strike against Bell Atlantic if contract negotiations are unsuccessful.
The members voted by a near five to one margin to authorize the unions to call for a strike if necessary after contract expiration at midnight on Saturday, Aug. 8. Results of the membership vote were announced by CWA Vice Presidents Vincent Maisano, Peter Catucci and Jan Pierce, and IBEW National Director for Telecommunications Art Perry.
CWA and IBEW have been in formal negotiations for new three-year contracts with Bell Atlantic since mid-June in Washington. Intense negotiations between the parties are continuing on behalf of 52,000 union-represented workers, in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
Union bargaining goals for Bell Atlantic include: employment security; improved standard of living through substantial base wage gains, as well as family care improvement, improvement of health care benefits, and pension increases; improvements in working conditions; expanded education and training programs; and initiatives to eliminate monitoring, and manage technology to improve worker satisfaction, instead of threatening jobs and job content.
CWA represents over 600,000 workers in telecommunications and other sectors in the United States and Canada, including more than 40,000 at Bell Atlantic. The IBEW represents 850,000 workers in telecommunications and other sectors in the United States and Canada, including about 12,000 at Bell Atlantic.
