This statistic allows investors to determine what portion of new sales has come from sales growth and what portion from the opening of
 increased 12.7%, while pharmacy same store sales rose 20.1%.

Total sales for the five-week period ended September 30, 2000 increased 15.3% to $1.947 billion, compared to $1.689 billion in the prior year period. Total pharmacy sales represented 63.9% of total company sales in September.

Year-to-date, same store sales for the thirty-nine week period ended September 30, 2000 increased 11.1% over the prior year period, while pharmacy same store sales increased 17.5%. Total sales for the thirty-nine week period increased 13.0% to $14.599 billion, compared to $12.915 billion in 1999.

As of September 30, 2000, CVS operated 4,106 retail and specialty pharmacy stores in 29 states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). .
