 for the five weeks ended September 29, 2001 increased 6.8% over the prior year period.

Pharmacy same store sales increased 10.5%, while front-end same store sales increased 0.2%.

Total sales for the five-week period ended September 29, 2001 increased 8.6% to $2.12 billion, compared to $1.95 billion in the prior year period. Total pharmacy sales represented 66.9% of total company sales in September.

For the third quarter, same store sales increased 7.6% over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 11.8%, while front-end same store sales increased 0.3%. Total sales for the third quarter increased 10.1% to $5.41 billion, compared to $4.92 billion in 2000.

Year-to-date, same store sales for the thirty-nine week period ended September 29, 2001 increased 9.0% over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 14.1%, while front-end same store sales increased 0.4%. Total sales for the thirty-nine week period increased 11.6% to $16.29 billion, compared to $14.60 billion in 2000.

As of September 29, 2001, CVS operated 4,135 retail and specialty pharmacy stores in 32 states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). .
