This statistic allows investors to determine what portion of new sales has come from sales growth and what portion from the opening of
 for the six weeks ended January 1, 2000 increased 13.7% over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales rose 22.7%. Total pharmacy sales represented 56% of total company sales in December.

Total sales for the six-week period ended January 1, 2000 increased 37.4% to $2.388 billion, compared to $1.738 billion in the five-week period ended December 26, 1998.

Year-to-date, same store sales for the fifty-three week period ended January 1, 2000 increased 12.5% over the prior year period, while pharmacy same store sales increased 19.4%. Total sales for the fifty-three week period ended January 1, 2000 increased 18.5% to $18.098 billion, compared to $15.274 billion in the fifty-two week period ended December 26, 1998.

As of January 1, 2000, CVS operated 4,098 stores in 26 states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). .
