This statistic allows investors to determine what portion of new sales has come from sales growth and what portion from the opening of
 (sales from stores open more than one year) for the four weeks ended April 27, 2002 increased 7.1% over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 12.8%, while front-end same store sales decreased 3.6%.

April sales were negatively impacted by an early Easter (March 31st this year versus April 15th last year), which shifted holiday sales from April into March. Same store sales for the combined months of March and April 2002 increased 10.1%, while pharmacy same store sales rose 12.8% and front-end same store sales increased 4.7%.

Total sales for the four-week period ended April 27, 2002 increased 7.8% to $1.81 billion, compared to $1.68 billion in the prior year period. Sales for the combined months of March and April 2002 increased 10.4% from the same two months in 2001. Total pharmacy sales represented 69% of total company sales in April.

Year-to-date, same store sales for the seventeen-week period ended April 27, 2002 increased 9.4% over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 11.9%, while front-end same store sales increased 4.6%. Total sales for the seventeen-week period increased 10.1% to $7.78 billion, compared to $7.06 billion in 2001.
