:CVS) today announced that total sales for the four-week period ended April 30, 2005 increased 31.2% to $2.78 billion, compared to $2.12 billion in the prior year period. The increase includes the impact of the acquisition completed on July 31, 2004, of 1,268 Eckerd drugstores, as well as Eckerd's pharmacy benefit management A Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) is a third party administrator of prescription drug programs. They are primarily responsible for processing and paying prescription drug claims.  and mail order pharmacy business. Total pharmacy sales represented 71.7% of total company sales in April.

This statistic allows investors to determine what portion of new sales has come from sales growth and what portion from the opening of
 (sales from stores open more than one year) for the four weeks ended April 30, 2005 increased 5.2% over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 7.9%, while front-end same store sales decreased 0.7%. Same store sales do not include the acquired Eckerd drugstores, which will be included in same store sales beginning in August 2005.

April sales were negatively impacted by an earlier Easter (March 27th this year versus April 11th last year), which shifted more holiday sales into March. Same store sales for the combined months of March and April 2005 increased 6.5%, while pharmacy same store sales rose 7.5% and front-end same store sales increased 4.3%.

Year-to-date, total sales for the seventeen-week period ended April 30, 2005, increased 33.8% to $11.96 billion, compared to $8.93 billion in 2004. Same store sales for the seventeen-week period increased 7.5% over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 8.6%, while front-end same store sales increased 5.0%.
