These strong July results followed CVS' robust second quarter same store sales, which not only led the industry but were among the highest in all of retail. Total sales for the four-week period ended July 29, 2000 increased 11.7% to $1.465 billion, compared to $1.312 billion in the prior year period. Total pharmacy sales represented 62% of total company sales in July. Year-to-date, same store sales for the thirty-week period ended July 29, 2000 increased 10.5% over the prior year period, while pharmacy same store sales increased 16.8%. Total sales for the thirty-week period increased 12.4% to $11.148 billion, compared to $9.915 billion in 1999. As of July 29, 2000, CVS operated 4,083 retail and specialty pharmacy stores in 29 states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C.
