CUSTOMER NETWORK MANAGEMENT FOR SMDS: PRIVATE NETWORK FLEXIBILITY IN THE PUBLIC NETWORK

Siemens Stromberg Carlson Announces CNM for EWSM Cell Switching Systems
WASHINGTON, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Siemens Stromberg-Carlson today announced a Customer Network Management (CNM) system for users of Switched Multimegabit Data Services (SMDS) on the company's EWSM(R) Cell Switching System, currently in service with Bell Atlantic, Ameritech and MCI. CNM is being demonstrated publicly for the first time at the INTEROP '93 exhibition here.
The Customer Network Management (CNM) System provides sophisticated network management capabilities using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). "Customer Network management gives high speed data users all the advantages of private data networks with the flexibility and cost advantages of switched public network services," said Eve Aretakis, vice president of product line management-switching at Siemens Stromberg- Carlson.
CNM service on the EWSM System is compatible with users' existing SNMP managers, and is supported via the NetExpert from Objective Systems Integrator (OSI) attached to the EWSM Network Management Center. This information provided by the CNM server is available to the customer inband via the broadband public network. The same technology that allows fast, reliable data communication between two users also allows the user's SNMP manager to communicate with the CNM server.
Multiple levels of security are provided so that CNM subscribers can only view information relative to their connections to the public network. For example, CNM subscribers can access the CNM server. Further security is provided by screening the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and only allowing designated workstations to access the CNM server.
The graphical presentation of the network displays the status of the network elements, trunks, subscriber transmission facilities and connections from the network to the Network Management Center. The user will simply click on an icon representing any network element to obtain a more detailed view of that element where applicable. Pertinent text data is displayed at each level of graphical detail.
