CURTIS A DODGER, FIELDER A YANKEE.

Shortly before Wednesday night's trading deadline, the Dodgers acquired center fielder Chad Curtis Chad David Curtis (born November 6 1968 in Marion, Indiana, United States) is a former center and left fielder in Major League Baseball who played from 1992-2001, notably for the New York Yankees.  from the Detroit Tigers The Detroit Tigers are a professional baseball team based in Detroit, Michigan. ``He fits a couple of needs,'' said Dodgers executive vice president Fred Claire Fred Claire (b. ``There were several things we were working on. I saw this as our best opportunity.''

Curtis, whom Angels hitting instructor Rod Carew once called uncoachable, is thought to be an average defensive center fielder. The Angels traded Curtis to the Tigers in April 1995 for Tony Phillips.

The Dodgers succeeded in upgrading at both the leadoff and center-field positions, where Wayne Kirby played for the past two weeks, and were not forced to deal any of what they consider their better prospects. However, they did not address their need at third base or on the bench, which lacks a left-handed power hitter. Also, the Dodgers were thought to be inquiring about top-tier players, such as Brian McRae of the Chicago Cubs.

Curtis, 27, is in the final season of a multiyear deal that pays him $2 million this year. He is eligible for arbitration after the season, though the Tigers did not intend to offer it.

Eischen was 0-1 with a 4.78 ERA in 28 appearances. Cummings, who will report to Triple-A Toledo, was 2-6 with a 4.14 ERA at Albuquerque. Eischen's absence will allow the Dodgers to keep Darren Dreifort on the major-league roster when Tom Candiotti returns from the disabled list.

From Detroit to Los Angeles, Curtis picked up 28-1/2 games in the standings.

``I'm happy to be going to a contender,'' said Curtis, who was raised in Michigan. ``But I had hoped to stay with the Tigers.''

Said Travis Fryman, a teammate of Curtis': ``I think Chad will shine with the Dodgers.''
