CURTAIN GOING UP YOUNG THESPIANS GET SUMMER ROLES.

on the main stage at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre. .

An instructor slowly moved to the front of the dimly lit area, browsing through an illuminated iPod. She found the song she wanted, and the fast-paced tune ``What You Own'' from the Broadway musical ``Rent'' began blaring throughout the theater.

The 26 dancers began moving in tune with the pounding music, gyrating their heads in a circle, and then twirling Twirling is any of several artforms, hobbies, or sport and recreational activities accomplished by spinning or rotating the twirled object either for exercise, or in a rhythmic, or otherwise artful manner.  their arms in synch with the sound.

The flexible teens are taking part in the Lancaster Performing Arts Center's sixth annual Summer Theater Program. The three-week program teaches acting techniques, stage management and technical aspects of theater. The program culminates at the end of July with a production of the Italian comedy ``Servant of Two Masters A Servant to Two Masters (Arlecchino servitore di due padroni) is a comedy by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni written in 1753.

This play begins with the character Beatrice, who has traveled to Venice disguised as her dead brother in search of the man who

``We really want to prepare the kids,'' performance director Perry Self said while teens practiced onstage. ``If they want to move beyond acting in high school, we want to help them.''

To that extent, Self, a theater instructor at Highland High School Highland High School or Highlands High School may refer to:

  • Highland High School (Bakersfield, California)
  • Highland High School (Palmdale, California)
, and his crew don't only teach basic acting principles, but also branch out into behind-the-scenes workings and set construction.

``The program gives students broad theater knowledge,'' he said. ``We want them to understand the entire process.''

Self, who helped found the theater program in 2000, said this year's session is progressing well.

``They bring a lot of ideas to the program,'' he said. ``This group is just going really well.''

Technical director Rick Vander Hyde shares Self's view of the kids.

``I'm extremely happy,'' he said from behind his desk at the performing arts center. ``We set goals, and we have met or even exceeded them.''

Vander Hyde, who has helped with the theater program since its inception, teaches students about the various technical aspects of theater, including lighting and set design. Vander Hyde has found himself busier than ever with this year's batch of thespians.

``Not as many returning students know a lot about design,'' Vander Hyde said. ``I'm incredibly more involved in helping them.''

Even though he focuses on the technical side of the stage, Vander Hyde said he wants the students well-rounded in the art.

``I try to give them a good grounding in theater techniques,'' he said. ``With only a few weeks, I really can only teach the basics.''

Third-year participant Julia Murray said she sees the focus on far-reaching theater knowledge.

``We have had a lot more classes,'' she said. ``We have learned a lot of different aspects.''

Murray, who will serve as the stage manager for STP's production of ``Servant of Two Masters,'' said she has thoroughly enjoyed her latest experience with the class.

Caleb Barnes is new to the STP STP or standard temperature and pressure, standard conditions for measurement of the properties of matter. ``It's been very nice,'' the 15-year-old said. ``The program reminds me to be more constant in my acting.''

Barnes will play Floriendo, a prominent character in ``Servant of Two Masters.'' Besides STP, he has also taken part in several other community productions.

He said that, even though the experience is enjoyable, it is nearly impossible to coast through.

``STP is not easy; you have to work,'' Barnes said. ``You can forget your personal life, at least for three weeks.''

Performances of ``Servant of Two Masters'' will be performed at 7 p.m. July 28 and 2 p.m. July 29. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased by calling (661) 723-5950 or visiting the Lancaster Performing Arts Center's box-office window, 750 W. Lancaster Blvd.
