announced Tuesday that it's getting into monkey business.

The beloved simian will find his way onto plush toys, mugs, figurines, picture frames and other tchotchkes, manufactured through Applause's Dakin division.

The toys should be in stores by April.

Originally created by authors Margaret and H.A. Rey as a line of educational books, George and his inquisitive in·quis·i·tive

And though the primate remains popular with the young crowd, Applause Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Solomon said he's caught on with the ``tween'' set, ages 11-20.

``This monkey is different than almost any other character,'' Solomon said. ``There's a movement among tweens right now where George has a very hip attitude. It's uncommon when you can reach a wide demo all with the same character.''

Though the monkey has been licensed in the past, Solomon thinks the market has not yet reached its saturation point saturation point

This is good news for Applause, seeing how the merchandising agreement is for three years, also covering Universal's other properties, such as Chilly Willy the penguin and Woody Woodpecker woodpecker, common name for members of the Picidae, a large family of climbing birds found in most parts of the world. Woodpeckers typically have sharp, chisellike bills for pecking holes in tree trunks, and long, barbed, extensible tongues with which they impale .

``So many other licensed characters have been overexploited at deep discounters and as fast-food promotions, the consumer has gotten tired of them,'' Solomon said. ``George is George I, king of Greece

still fresh, which made him especially interesting to me.''

Universal Studios representatives were unavailable for comment, but offered a written statement on the deal.

``Applause understands the values of Curious George and the role he plays in the lives of children,'' said Tim Rothwell, senior vice president of merchandising and marketing. ``We selected Applause because of their outstanding quality and attention to detail.''
