10th-grader Emily Brownlow found a practical use for what some consider a dead language.

``I'm personally interested in Latin. I like the time period. I like Rome,'' said Brownlow, a second-year Latin student and president of the school's Latin club. ``It improves your vocabulary, and you get all-around better grades in science and English.''

Brownlow has parlayed her interest in the classical language into a cum laude cum lau·de

award for scoring 30 out of 40 on the National Latin Exam given by the American Classical League The American Classical League, founded in 1919, is an organization devoted to promoting the ancient Roman, Greek, and classical language and culture. Though most of its members are teachers of Latin, Greek, and Classics at all levels of education, the league is open to any person .

The league is an organization that promotes the study of Latin and Greek among Americans. Last year 96,000 students took the test. In the spring 29 Highland students for the first time sat for the multiple-choice exam.

``It was a difficult test. It required a knowledge of Roman culture and history, and there was a lot of advanced grammar,'' said Latin and Spanish teacher Ann Robins, whose classroom has a poster stating, ``Latin is Having the Edge.''

Brownlow said the test was challenging.

``It wasn't just memorization mem·o·rize

Highland High is the only school in the Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
that offers Latin courses. Robins, who has a degree in Latin, decided to teach Latin after gauging interest on campus.

``Sixty to 70 percent of all words used in English come from Latin,'' Robins said. ``Studies show students who have taken Latin score 140 points higher on their verbal SATs.''

In California the popularity of the language seems to growing.

Enrollment in first- and second-year Latin has increased from 3,466 in 1992 to 3,735 in 1994, according to according to

The number of students taking advanced Latin has jumped from 947 to 1,041 in the same time period, figures show.

Brownlow likes to dispense Latin trivia. For example, she said Lancaster is derived from Latin. There was a town named Lan in England, where the Romans established a camp. The Latin word for camp is ``castre,'' which was added to the town's name.

Brownlow said one Latin phrase learned early on in her studies has become sort of an unofficial class motto: ``Vacca est tarda,'' which means ``the cow is slow.''

Another favorite of Brownlow's is, ``Quando porci volent,'' or ``when pigs fly When Pigs Fly is an episode from season 3 of the animated TV series Jackie Chan Adventures. Plot
Jackie is already onto the next noble animal - The Rooster, Power of Levitation! Unfortunately, the rooster has discovered its unique Power of Levitation and is
