on Monday to kick off a weeklong international architectural conference.

Flags from more than two dozen Latin American countries ringed the quad of the Burbank campus where students listened to Universal CityWalk's architect Jon Jerde during the first lecture of the International Conference of Latin American Students in Architecture.

Students said the conference is an opportunity for people of different cultures to exchange ideas and to learn from notable American architects.

``When we meet all the cultures and to learn with all the others, that's important,'' said third-year architecture student Aline Felix, 19, of Brazil. ``It's part of our learning. The architect has to do this. He doesn't live in a box by himself. He has to have contact with other cultures.''

Monday's event at Woodbury was one stop in a weeklong schedule that will take students to architecture schools at the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools.
