CUFF STOPS STEINBERG IN STATE AMATEUR.

Temecula's Ed Cuff Jr. birdied three of the first six holes Thursday and rode that early 3-up lead to a 1-up victory over medalist Craig Steinberg in the second round of the state amateur golf championship at Pebble Beach.

Matthew Christensen of Fresno defeated Randy Haag of San Francisco in 19 holes; Fresno's Todd Rose held off Chico's James Wilson 2 and 1; and Daniel Arroyo of Berkeley scored a 3 and 2 win over Carlsbad's Donald O'Connor in Thursday's other matches.
