CTK Inc. Creates Division to Help Nonprofits Measure Results, Cut Costs.

AUSTIN, Texas -- CTK Inc., a leading provider of Web-based performance-monitoring software for charitable organizations, has hired a nationally recognized expert to help nonprofits prove their effectiveness with outcome-based reporting and analysis.

Scott Smith joins CTK in mid-October as Professional Services Director and will head up the new CTK Outcomes Resource Group. Smith, who holds a graduate degree in computer science from Queen's University, Canada, has served for five years as chief information officer of United Way of Massachusetts Bay in Boston. That organization has been a leader in the nationwide "outcomes movement," which aims to justify charitable funding with formal measures of how nonprofits achieve their goals. Smith has also played an active role in Harvard's Learning Innovations consortium, which seeks to understand how theories of innovation and collaboration can enhance business strategies.

"Over the past decade, organizations such as United Ways, as well as government and private funders, have made it clear that charitable groups have to prove their effectiveness if they expect to be funded," said Kathryn Engelhardt-Cronk, CTK's founder and CEO. "Scott's group will have the expertise to help any nonprofit develop measures appropriate for its unique situation."

CTK's widely used software provides human service providers and funders with technology tools that compile quantitative and qualitative service and funding-related data, all designed to show how well a nonprofit is achieving its mission and goals. The CTK software is Web-based, and clients access it through a standard browser. CTK's technology tools are used by several hundred nonprofits in the United States and United Kingdom. The CTK Outcomes Resource Group will provide expertise to ensure that nonprofits are tracking the right measures and compiling appropriate reports.

"We have found that a cookie-cutter approach to outcome measurement often fails to grasp performance or fit the unique needs of each nonprofit organization," Engelhardt-Cronk said. "The CTK Outcomes Resource Group experts will work with individual nonprofits to make sure the numbers they track reflect how they do their work and report what's actually being achieved."

Engelhardt-Cronk said CTK software has also cut costs and freed up staff time at most nonprofits that use it.

"The United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona reported it saved from 40 to 50 hours of staff time and several thousand dollars during one year's funding process, plus vastly improved their ability to tie funding to community impact," she said. "That's significant given the funding pressure on charitable organizations."
