Wi-Fi Security: Problems and Solutions
March 17, 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
The security issues associated with 802.11 wireless LAN technology
have received almost as much attention as its Wi-Fi's success in the
marketplace. University research teams have published detailed exposes
on cracking the basic security provisions in the IEEE standard,
spurring titanic efforts by vendors, the IEEE, the Wi-Fi Alliance, and
others to rectify the situation. This seminar will discuss and
examine:
-- The strengths and weaknesses of WEP (Wired Equivalent
Privacy), the original 802.11 security standard.
-- 802.1x - the recently ratified IEEE framework for
authentication and authorization procedures.
-- EAP (Extended Authentication Protocol) and its ramifications
for strong authentication.
-- VPN (virtual private network) technology and the problems it
does and doesn't solve.
-- WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), WEP's replacement, based on IEEE
standards promulgated by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
Wireless LAN Meets Wireless WAN
March 18, 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Cellular data and fixed wireless LANs have, until recently, been
entirely separate and somewhat competitive realms. Two forces are
likely to change this:
-- Consumer demand as people are increasingly likely to carry
multifunction mobile computing/communications devices equipped
to connect to both mobile and fixed wireless networks.
-- The push to ubiquitous public access for WLAN. Wi-Fi operators
offer great front-end technology, but lack scalable back-end
systems. Other wireless carriers already have extensive
back-end infrastructure in place.
Numerous developers are hard at work bridging the gulf that separates
the telephony-based and data-based worlds. This seminar looks in
detail at the trends and initiatives bringing WLAN and WWAN together.
