CTDI Introduces the XCel-4e Rural DSL Extension System.

WEST CHESTER West Chester, borough (1990 pop. 18,041), seat of Chester co., SE Pa., W of Philadelphia; inc. 1799. Primarily residential, West Chester was long the trade and processing center for an agricultural region that is now mainly suburbs. , Pa. -- Communications Test Design, Inc. With the growing demand for broadband internet access Broadband Internet access, often shortened to just "broadband", is high speed Internet access—typically contrasted with dial-up access over modem.

Dial-up modems are generally only capable of a maximum bitrate of 56 kbit/s (kilobits per second) and require the full use of a
, many remote users have limited options for broadband DSL. CTDI's new XCel-4e optimally addresses this demand by delivering 8 Mbps DSL service to remote users, including subscribers located more than 100 kft from a DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL. . CTDI is committed to bringing broadband access See broadband and wireless broadband.  to rural users by enabling carriers to deliver high-speed service See broadband.  to any subscriber, anywhere in the network.

The XCel-4e system transparently extends existing central office or remote DSLAM-based ADSL See DSL.

2+. Each XCel-4e system accepts four ADSL2+ subscriber lines from the DSLAM. These four lines are then carried on a single copper pair at a rate of 8 Mbps. Using line-powered repeaters, providers can reach four customers per system at a distance of 40 kft from the DSLAM*. For longer loops, CTDI will be introducing a locally powered repeater to deliver ubiquitous broadband access of up to 8 Mbps per user for all subscribers, regardless of location.

As opposed to passive repeaters which simply amplify the signal, the XCel-4e fully terminates and regenerates the signal, allowing it to be repeated multiple times. "The XCel-4e presents an enticing business case for carriers since it enables 8 Meg DSL service at any distance using existing copper plant. The release of the XCel-4e also shows CTDI's commitment to our customers through innovation and our investment in R&D," stated Brian Parsons, director of CTDI's Products Division.

Over the past months, CTDI has successfully deployed the XCel-4e with three customers. These beta trials have included varying cable characteristics and physical geographies. In each case, the end-user achieved more than 8 Mbps service, thus providing incremental sales for the carrier through this new high-speed DSL product offering. The XCel-4e is now available from CTDI. For more information, or for additional CTDI products, visit www.ctdi.com.
