CT Enterography -- CTE -- Superior to Capsule Endoscopy for Detecting Crohn's Disease in Small Bowel; Study Results Point to Expanding Role for CTE and VoLumen.LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. -- E-Z-EM, Inc., (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :EZEM) today announced that results of a study presented at the 2005 Digestive Disease Week (DDW) meeting show that computed tomography enterography (CTE) is superior to capsule endoscopy in detecting Crohn's Disease in the small bowel as measured by specificity and overall accuracy, and provided comparable sensitivity. CTE is a study that uses an oral contrast, like VoLumen(R) low Hounsfield value oral contrast, to distend di·stend v. The 42 patient study -- "Small Bowel (SB) Imaging in Crohn's Disease (CD): A Prospective, Blinded, 4-Way Comparison Trial" by Dr. Craig A. Solem, et al, of the Mayo Clinic evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of CT Enterography (CTE), ileocolonoscopy (IC), capsule endoscopy (CE), and small bowel follow-through A small bowel follow-through, also called small bowel series, is a radiologic examination of the small intestine from the distal duodenum/duodenojejunal junction to the ileocecal valve. (SBFT) in the diagnosis of Crohn's disease in the small bowel. The study showed that CTE with VoLumen and CE "have similarly high sensitivity (82% and 83% respectively) for detecting active Crohn's disease, and appear to be superior to IC and SBFT" (74% and 65% respectively). The specificity for CTE with VoLumen was 89%, as compared to 100% for IC, 94% for SBFT, and only 53% for CE. As measured by general accuracy, CTE with VoLumen was comparable to IC (85% and 86% respectively) and superior to both CE (67%) and SBFT (79%). Commenting on the results, Anthony A. Lombardo, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. of E-Z-EM, said, "Small bowel imaging is often done prior to capsule endoscopy due to the risk of capsule retention in an undetected blockage. These results strongly suggest that for suspected Crohn's disease, small bowel imaging with CTE can obviate the need for follow-up study with capsule endoscopy. In conjunction with other recently completed research which demonstrated the superiority of VoLumen low Hounsfield value oral contrast in CTE and other abdominal imaging procedures, this study points to an expanding role for CTE and VoLumen in the diagnosis of Crohn's disease. In fact, researchers involved in this study have since standardized the use of VoLumen in their CTE procedures. We are delighted with these results and look forward to a growing role of VoLumen in CT imaging." DDW is a major medical gathering sponsored and hosted by four well-respected societies focused on diseases of the gastrointestinal tract: The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD AASLD American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases ), American Gastroenterological Association The American Gastroenterological Association is a medical association of gastroenterologists. About 14,000 scientists and physicians are members of the organization, which was founded in 1897 and is the oldest medical association in the United States. (AGA), The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, or ASGE, is a professional organization of physicians dedicated to improving endoscopy. The ASGE is made up largely of gastroenterologists from the United States. (ASGE), Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). These prestigious associations represent a combined membership of over 23,700 physicians, researchers, educators and other medical professionals. The meeting is being held from May 14-19 at the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago, IL. About E-Z-EM, Inc. E-Z-EM is a leading manufacturer of contrast agents for gastrointestinal radiology.
