CSX TRANSPORTATION TO ACQUIRE 50 LOCOMOTIVES FROM GE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX Transportation

Inc. announced today that it will acquire 50 Dash 8 wide-cab locomotives from GE Transportation Systems to be delivered later this year.
CSX is exercising an option for the six-axle, 4,000-horsepower units under a multiyear agreement with GE, which included 109 locomotives in 1991. The new units will each be equipped with a microprocessor control and diagnostic system together with a desk-top controller.
"These units include a number of new design features and will increase the reliability of our fleet," said Jerry R. Davis, executive vice president and chief operating officer for CSX Transportation. "These advances will help us provide better service for our customers."
Davis noted that the railroad initiated an innovative step when the multiyear contract was first awarded by including CSX operating craft union leaders in cab design.
 J. Robert Malone, manager-North American locomotive sales for GE Transportation, said the order was extremely important "in terms of helping attain GE Transportation's 1992 production plan.
"Importantly also, CSX has asked us to support their operating plan by delivering the units to meet its traffic demands this fall. While this results in a substantially shortened lead time, we are proud of CSX's continued confidence in our ability to meet these kinds of commitments," Malone added.
CSX Transportation Inc. and its 36,000 employees provide rail transportation and distribution services over an 18,800 route-mile network in 20 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada. CSXT is a business unit of CSX Corporation, headquartered in Richmond, Va.
