CSUN-ALUM GENERAL KILLED IN PLANE CRASH.

An Air Force lieutenant general who is the commander of all military forces in Alaska was killed Sunday in a private plane crash. A passenger also was killed.

Lt. Gen. David J. McCloud Lieutenant General David J. McCloud was born 15 February 1945 in California. He died 26 July 1998 in Anchorage, Alaska, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. , who went to college in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

, was flying his YAK-54, a single-engine, aerobatic plane, when it crashed in a paratrooper drop zone at Fort Richardson, just east of Anchorage.

The passenger was identified as Lewis Cathrow of Alexandria, Va.

He held a bachelor's degree in engineering from California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It is a major air force training center.  in Texas, McCloud was a pilot with 4,100 hours, principally in fighter planes.

The cause of the crash was not known. The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating.

McCloud had purchased the plane he was flying about four months ago, said Col. Tim Brady, the vice commander of the 11th Air Force, a component of the Alaskan Command. Brady said McCloud had flown many hours in a similar model, the YAK-52.

Before coming to Alaska, McCloud worked for the Joint Chiefs of Staff as director for force structure, resources and assessment.

He is survived by his wife, Anne.
