CSUN WON'T TAKE UC IRVINE LIGHTLY TWO WINS ALREADY OVER ANTEATERS, BUT NO OVERCONFIDENCE.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - Cal State Northridge had no problem with UC Irvine during the regular season. The Matadors hope the same holds true in the postseason.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (17-12) will play fifth-seeded UC Irvine (16-12), which it swept by a combined 33 points in the regular season, at 8:30 p.m. tonight in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim Convention Center is a major convention center in Anaheim, California. It is located across from the Disneyland Resort on Katella Avenue. Much of the Anaheim Convention Center has been renovated in recent years with state-of-the-art facilities. .

The Matadors earned the fourth seed and a bye in Wednesday's first round. UC Irvine defeated Idaho 80-67 to advance to the quarterfinals.

CSUN's 66-52 victory at UC Irvine and its 79-60 win at the Northridge Gym this season are irrelevant, CSUN coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  said after the Anteaters' victory Wednesday.

``All that means nothing once you start the postseason,'' he said.

``No one is even thinking about the regular season.

We can't be focused on that. We know what they do and they know what we do. We need to play well, execute and play unselfish. Irvine played with a lot of confidence (vs. Idaho)''

Freshman forward Calvin Chitwood will be available.

CSUN avoided a scare when Chitwood collided with a teammate in Tuesday's practice. He was taken to the Northridge Medical Hospital by ambulance because of tenderness in his vertebrae Vertebrae

.

``It turned out to be nothing,'' Braswell said.

 measures.

I was there at the hospital and the doctor walked in and said, 'You have a wonderful neck.' ''

Chitwood participated in the Matadors' practice Wednesday at tiny Hope International University in Fullerton.

Because Irvine had the highest seed and won the early game, the Matadors had several extra hours to prepare for the Anteaters, who have won five of their past six games. Last year, CSUN played four games in four days during the tournament.

In the last meeting between the teams, CSUN used a box-and-one defense The Box-and-one defense is a particular type of defense used in basketball. The box-and-one is a hybrid between a man-to-man defense (in which each defensive player is responsible for marking a player on the other team) and a zone defense (in which each defensive player is  in an effort to limit junior guard Ross Schraeder, who leads the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game.

Braswell said the Matadors would mix their defenses, as is customary.

--UC Irvine 80, Idaho 67: Junior guard Aaron Fitzgerald scored a career-high 30 points as the Anteaters pulled away in the second half. Irvine outrebounded Idaho 50-25 and the Vandals had just four offensive rebounds.

``Aaron had a remarkable game and he plays well when it's on a big stage,'' Irvine coach Pat Douglass Pat Douglass, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for UC Irvine.

Dandrick Jones and Dillan Higdon scored 19 points each as Idaho finished the season at 8-22.

The Gauchos rallied froma 12-point second-half deficit behind 19 points from Joe See, who made three 3-pointers, and got 13 points from Chrismen Oliver.

Long Beach State had won seven of its past eight games before the tournament and ended the season at 10-20.
