CSUN WOMEN'S SOCCER PREVIEW : LAKE TRIP UNIFIES CSUN SOCCER TEAM STILL SPORTS YOUNG FACES.Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer A psychologist. Chores. ``We did a lot of running and swimming and working out,'' said sophomore Jera Sanneman. ``But while we were there, we really got close.'' This is good. The trip was meant for just that. It was coach Brian Wiesner's attempt to ensure the program's second season is more pleasant - and more successful - than its first. ``When they showed up last year, they had to stake their claim,'' Wiesner remembers of trying to mold mold, name for certain multicellular organisms of the various classes of the kingdom Fungi, characteristically having bodies composed of a cottony mycelium. Last year we just played what we could play. I couldn't pick and choose (which players) we played.'' Not that the season went all that badly. Everyone stayed alive and the freshmen-laden team went 4-1-1 in its final six matches and finished the season with an 8-9-3 record. ``I thought we could have done a lot better,'' said Maricca Pichaikul, a sophomore from Grant High School. ``We did OK for a first-year team.'' And with a year to grow and learn the hard way, the Matadors feel like the time for success is now. ``We can make the playoffs,'' Wiesner said. So, with his first full recruiting season, Wiesner set out to fill those holes. ``I think we shored it up,'' he said. To strengthen his attack, Wiesner signed junior transfers Marilyn Huschka from El Camino College El Camino College is a two-year public community college located in the city of Torrance in Los Angeles County, California. For the defense, Wiesner went searching for a sweeper while another fullback appeared from just the other side of campus. Wiesner expects Kristi Tynan, also out of El Camino, to take over at sweeper, allowing Pichaikul to move to an offensive midfielder

But the sweetest find for the program might be junior Pam Karbowski. A guard on the basketball team, Karbowski will start on defense for the soccer team. ``She's very good,'' Pichaikul said. ``When we first played with her I was shocked.'' Wiesner did not land a midfielder, but he returns Rosanna Mellon, Amy Gill, Pichaikul and Sanneman. ``I'm not worried about the midfield mid·field n. Sports 1.
