And after more than four hours, after USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  and Cal State Northridge pounded out 46 hits, nine home runs and 13 doubles, it finally ended.

Northridge's Adrian Mendoza, the least likely starter to hit a home run, ended a wild contest with a 10th-inning homer that gave the Matadors an 18-17 victory over the Trojans on Tuesday in a nonconference game.

``It's not too often I hit home runs,'' said Mendoza, a freshman who had only one entering the contest. ``I wasn't sure it was gone. I haven't really been swinging the bat well.''

Mendoza's hit easily cleared the right-field fence, and mercifully ended a game that appeared on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. How crazy was it?

The game swung back and forth more like a football game.

Northridge had a 6-3 lead. USC opened up a 10-6 advantage. The Matadors scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to take a 17-10 lead. Then the Trojans scored six runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie the game.

Northridge used only four pitchers, but All-American Erasmo Ramirez (9-3) pitched the final 2-2/3 innings, an impressive feat considering he pitched a complete-game victory over San Francisco last Friday.

``He was the end of the line,'' Northridge coach Mike Batesole said. ``We were going to live or die with him. Till the game was over.''

The victory was critical for Northridge (35-17-1), which as an independent is fighting for an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. USC, which is tied for third place in the Pacific-10 Southern Division, is also hoping for an at-large bid.

``We are a bubble team,'' Gillespie said.
