CSUN VS. BOISE STATE: A CLOSER LOOK : THE HERO.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  quarterback Aaron Flowers passed for six touchdowns, breaking his own school record of five. His 442 passing yards marked the eighth time in 12 starts he surpassed the 400-yard mark.

The Goat

Boise State head coach Houston Nutt Houston Dale Nutt, Jr. (born 14 October 1957), is an American football coach, and the current head coach at the University of Arkansas. Early life and family
Houston Dale Nutt was born on 14 October 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States.
. In a move consistent with his last name, Nutt pulled starting quarterback Nate Sparks and starting running back Reggie Etheridge with the Broncos up 16-0 early in the second quarter. At the time, the two had accounted for 90 percent of Boise's offense. With them out, the Broncos sputtered, punted for the first time and never recovered, even once the pair returned.

New stadium has Boise

ecstatic

How excited are they in Boise, Idaho “Boise” redirects here. For other uses, see Boise (disambiguation).

Boise is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Idaho. It is the county seat of Ada County and the principal city of the Boise metropolitan area.
, over the opening of 7,000 new seats at Bronco Stadium Bronco Stadium also serves as a track & field stadium; it has hosted the NCAA track & field championships twice, in 1994 and 1999.

The stadium is located at the east end of the university's campus, bordered by Broadway Avenue on the east and the Boise River to the north.
? Well, pretty gosh-darn excited, judging by the in-depth, front-page coverage of the stadium expansion in the Idaho Statesman The Idaho Statesman is a U.S. daily newspaper serving the Boise, Idaho metropolitan area. The paper has a circulation of 65,000 daily, 87,640 Sunday, and employs about 450 people. It is owned by The McClatchy Company. .

The newspaper came up with these nuggets Nuggets can refer to several branches of interest:
  • , a compilation of U.S. psychedelic rock released between 1965 and 1968
  • , a Rhino Records box set of non-U.S.
 regarding the now-30,000-seat field:

At a sellout game, Bronco bronco: see mustang.  Stadium's population would rank as the fourth largest city in Idaho. The population of Murray, Ky. - site of Boise State coach Houston Nutt's last job - would only fill half the stadium.

Food ranks as a priority here - the 12 concession stands means one stand per every 2,500 fans during a sellout.

Wisely, the folks who added the concession stands also added a few water closets - the 18 bathrooms means one per every 1,667 fans.

And for the oddest trivia note of the day, the Statesman reports that the new section of seats is built at a 36-degree angle, the (gulp) steepest section of any college stadium in the country. ``Don't be scared,'' the Statesman reassures.

Feeling blue?: The floor of Bronco Stadium is a very un-grassy royal blue, the only one of its kind in the U.S. It's affectionately referred to as ``Smurf Turf,'' and it is well known for one reason.

Legend has it that when the blue stuff was laid down in 1986, before it had stripes, geese flying over mistook the stadium for a pond, and would land there. Boise State officials say no geese were ever physically hurt, though in the bird world they undoubtedly suffered immense embarrassment.

The striped field reportedly no longer causes bird-brain confusion.

Jitters jitters 'Butterflies' Psychology An episode of nervousness or anxiety that often precedes a public event; jitters is a type of performance anxiety which may affect actors in a stage production–stage fright or soloist musicians; it may respond to anxiolytics : CSUN coach Jim Fenwick and Boise coach Houston Nutt both made their debuts in new jobs Saturday, and one was doomed to start 0-1. Fenwick was a basket of nerves all week, wanting to make a good showing. Did that mean he had some sympathy for Nutt, who was in the same position?

``No,'' Fenwick said this week. ``I want to beat him.''

In memory of . . . : Before the game, Boise State had a moment of silence in honor of late coach Pokey Allen Ernest Duncan "Pokey" Allen Jr. (January 23, 1943 – December 30, 1996) was a football player and coach. Playing career
Allen played collegiately at quarterback and cornerback at Utah, where he led the team to a 32-6 victory over West Virginia in the 1964 Liberty
. The longtime coach and local legend died last December after a two-year bout with cancer.

Stat of the Game

Without three of their top receivers, the Matadors nevertheless had three receivers with 100 yards - Brian Comer (132 yards, 3 TDs), Drew Hill (115 yards) and Aaron Arnold (116 yards, 2 TDs).

Quote of the Game

``It (the win) was huge - huge for coach (Jim Fenwick) to get it under his belt, huge for all those people who thought football should have been dropped instead of other sports. This sends a message of what we can do.'' - CSUN quarterback Aaron Flowers, on Fenwick's first win.
