The program, known as Open University, gives students an opportunity to take courses on a space available basis, said Dan Wakelee, assistant director of the Ventura Campus.

``It allows people who are late in the process or those who only want to take one course a chance to get started,'' Wakelee said.

Individuals cannot complete a degree through Open University. However, a limited number of Open University units will be accepted toward a degree, Wakelee said. Those enrolling in the program may sign up for any university course.

About 90 percent of the university's courses still have space available, Wakelee said.

The cost is $142 per unit, with each class typically comprising three units. The price does not include books or lab fees. Individuals will be charged with a late fee of $25 after Sept. 23.
