On Thursday, the board of directors of the university corporation - which operates commercial facilities on campus - will vote on whether to grant Northridge a $586,000 loan so baseball and men's volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court.  as everything is until the state budget passes.''

Wilson said the state money, if approved, could be used to pay back the loan. But if the California Legislature does not OK the funding, Wilson already has determined other ways to pay back the money - private fund raising, forming a multiyear pay-back plan or recommending that the corporation make it an allocation instead of a loan.

However, university corporation director Donald Queen -- who doesn't have a vote -- doesn't believe the loan will be approved without budget approval.

``The loan would be subject to the state allocating it. If the state doesn't allocate it, there's no loan.''

A spokesman for Sen. Cathie Wright, who proposed that the state allocate the money for Northridge athletics, said the budget might be approved by this week.

Earlier this month, the state budget committee approved Wright's proposal requiring the Cal State University system's general support fund to provide Northridge the money to bring back four canceled men's programs for another year. The proposal now must be approved by the legislature.

Soccer and swimming have already been reinstated through private donations. Last week, administrators instructed volleyball and baseball coaches to start planning as if they have teams.
