CSUN TO OPEN NCAAS AS NO. 2 SEED IN FRESNO.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Cheri Shinn turned 22 Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. . One birthday gift she wanted was to learn that she and the Cal State Northridge softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team would compete in an NCAA NCAA

regional in Seattle, where they hoped to meet a team they had already beaten, Washington.

Alas, the NCAA isn't in the wish-granting business. Northridge was drawn into the region in Fresno for the fourth time in seven years.

But the powers that be still made Shinn and the second-seeded Matadors (37-17) smile by putting third-seeded Cal (34-25) in their group. Those two teams will meet in the first round of the double-elimination tournament A double-elimination tournament is a competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches.  Friday at a time to be determined today.

No. 1 Fresno State (45-10) and No. 4 Minnesota (45-19) complete the region, which runs Friday to Sunday and sends its winner to the College World Series May 21-25 in Oklahoma City Oklahoma City (1990 pop. 444,719), state capital, and seat of Oklahoma co., central Okla., on the North Canadian River; inc. 1890. The state's largest city, it is an important livestock market, a wholesale, distribution, industrial, and financial center, and a farm .

There are two reasons Shinn was pleased with the draw. First, Cal knocked Northridge out of the region last year, so revenge is on CSUN's mind.

There's also this fact: Cal isn't as good as Stanford, which also could have been drawn into Fresno's bracket In programming, brackets (the [ and ] characters) are used to enclose numbers and subscripts. For example, in the C statement int menustart [4] = ; the [4] indicates the number of elements in the array, and the contents are enclosed in curly braces.  but instead earned a top seed in the Stillwater, Okla., region.

A new NCAA rule doesn't allow more than one team from a conference in a region, so only one Pac-10 team could join the Matadors. The Fresno region was the seventh of eight regions the NCAA announced. Cal and Stanford had yet to be drawn.

``That's a plus,'' Shinn said. ``I'm comfortable with our site.''

Thirty-two teams were drawn into eight regions, with the Pac-10 getting six teams in. Of those six, Arizona, Stanford and Washington earned top seeds.
