CSUN STRONG IN CLOSE LOSS MATADORS HANG WITH OREGON OREGON 86, CSUN 77.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

EUGENE, Ore. - Although Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  called Oregon home for nearly five years, he shouldn't expect an invitation to return any time soon.

Braswell engineered Cal State Northridge's upset of the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. He and assistant coach Kenya Wilkins, a former Ducks player, received a warm standing ovation before the game.

It might have been their farewell visit after the latest scare.

Also known as "The Pit," it is known as one of the toughest arenas in the country for opposing players to play in. The arena is named for Clifton N. .

``You can't take the game away from them,'' Kent said. ``They battled us in a building where we've had a lot of success.''

Oregon's Luke Jackson had a game-high 23 points. Six players scored in double figures for the Matadors.

Braswell said all he wanted from his team was a chance to win. He can't complain about that. The game was close until the final minute.

Oregon had a four-point lead at 81-77 with 58 seconds left. The Ducks pulled away by hitting five of six free throws down the stretch, and CSUN missed its final three shots.

The 10th-ranked Ducks are the highest-ranked Division I team that CSUN has played in school history. Even UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
and Kansas - which CSUN played in the 2000-01 season - weren't ranked as high.

McArthur Court - known for its raucous student section - was silenced in the first half but came to life in the second.

Oregon, which never had more than a six-point lead in the first half, built a 10-point lead in the second half on a rare Braswell technical foul technical foul

with 12:10 left in the game.

Armand Thomas was called for his third foul and Braswell, who started high-stepping along the court, screamed something at official Charlie Range. He was immediately given a technical, and Jackson made both free throws for a 61-51 lead, Oregon's largest of the game.

Oregon now has an 18-game winning streak at McArthur Court.

The Ducks had won 15 consecutive games against nonconference opponents before Monday. The last nonconference team to beat Oregon at McArthur Court? Cal State Northridge.

CSUN (1-2) still hasn't cleaned up its act. The Matadors had 14 turnovers in the first half Monday after combining for 51 in its first two games.

Braswell, the former Oregon assistant, gave Oregon quite a game. The Matadors didn't look good in their opener after squandering squan·der

a 21-point lead at Portland State. They looked a little better in a 67-55 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday, although they still had 26 turnovers.

CSUN still looked like a young, confused team a couple of times. The Matadors had six players on the floor at one point, and the clock started. A few seconds later, CSUN realized the gaffe and Dan Read ran off the floor.

In the second half, Thomas - who forgot his game jersey at the hotel and had to switch to No. 13 - forgot to check in. Officials stopped the game, made him run over to the scorer's table and then let him back in the game.

Oregon led just 36-31 at halftime. The Matadors had their largest lead of the game at 9-3.

CSUN led by six points on an open shot in the lane by Ian Boylan - who had a team-high 13 points - with 16:29 left. Oregon had a three-minute scoring drought.
