CSUN SHORTCHANGED; TWO FOOTBALL ASSISTANTS WILL BE PAID BUT WON'T COACH.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

Cal State Northridge assistant football coaches Craig Wall and Keith Borges will be paid this season even though they aren't returning, creating a smaller staff and a hole in the team's budget.

``The next step would be for me to call (Wall and Borges) in and discuss with them their role in the department,'' Northridge Athletic Director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Dick Dull said.

Wall and Borges haven't been seen working in the football office since mid-May. Several players said last week they didn't want them to come back and coach.

Interim head coach Jeff Kearin said the other five coaches from former coach Ron Ponciano's staff are returning.

, CSUN has just six full-time coaches: Kearin, Foster Andersen (defensive coordinator), Bobby Connelly (offensive line), Aaron Flowers (quarterbacks), Armando Gonzalez (tight ends/wide receivers) and Terrance Johnson (linebackers).

The eight other teams in the Big Sky Conference average nine coaches per staff. Montana, picked to win the Big Sky by coaches and media, has 11 coaches.

``Sure, we're a little behind,'' Kearin said last Friday in the press conference announcing his hiring. ``(But) these guys have been working pretty hard. A lot of the stuff is done. It's not rocket science rocket science

The coaching staff was barred from the football office for 10 days in June and is trying to compact what would normally be three months' work into two.

``We're working 20 days straight,'' Flowers said last week. ``It's all football from here on out.''

Kearin said he was happy to promote Andersen, who coached the Matadors' defensive backs last year.

``Between (Andersen) and Ron (Ponciano), they've been the heart and soul of the defense the past couple years,'' Kearin said. ``Foster wants this team to do well and have some continuity.''

Offensively, the staff is set, with Kearin also taking on the title of offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. But Andersen and Johnson aren't enough to coach the defense, and Kearin said he plans to talk with Dull today about hiring a defensive-line coach.

``Names have been floating around,'' Kearin said. ``I even got a call from Charlie White.''

Kearin admits hiring White, the former Heisman Trophy winner at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  and San Fernando High star, would be a luxury the school doesn't seem to be able to afford.
