CSUN SETS : MATADORS CAN'T HOLD LEAD, LOSE CHANCE AT BIG DANCE MONTANA 82, CSUN 79.

Byline: Eric Noland Daily News Staff Writer

It's come to be known as the Big Dance. Cal State Northridge, after scrambling to get within tantalizing tan·ta·lize

The Matadors, who pulled off two stirring upsets to reach the Big Sky Conference Tournament final, took a stumbling step in their bid for a third Saturday night and lost 82-79 to Montana at Northern Arizona University Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a public university in Flagstaff, Arizona in the United States.

Thus, Montana will accept the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament can mean:

that is accorded the Big Sky champion, leaving upstart Northridge to ponder the fact that it came oh, so close to an improbable tournament bid in only its seventh season since moving up to Division I.

``I think as a whole, we just fought and fought and fought and kept fighting,'' said tournament Most Valuable Player Trenton Cross, his voice choking slightly with emotion. ``Unfortunately, we came up short.''

``Of course, no one expected little Northridge to get this far,'' added backcourt mate Derrick Higgins, an all-tournament team pick. ``We got to the championship game.

``Northridge is on the map. Everybody's going to know about Northridge now.''

They'll know that perhaps the scrappiest team the Big Sky has seen in some time battled to the verge of a third straight upset victory, one of enormous ramifications ramifications nplAuswirkungen pl , and simply ran out of miracles "Of Miracles" is the title of Section X of David Hume's An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1748). Northridge, which ended its season at 14-15, held a five-point lead (75-70) with 7 minutes, 10 seconds to play, but Montana roared toward the finish, pulling into the lead for good on Ryan Dick's two free throws with 44 seconds to play.

Inside the final minute, Cross, a deadly jump-shooter all night, missed from outside and forward Keith Higgins Keith Higgins is a Gaelic football player for Mayo. He is currently injured and ruled out of the 2007 championship.[1]  lost the ball to Montana's Chris Spoja on a drive into the lane.

And, after the Grizzlies The name Grizzlies may refer to:

got a driving, 4-foot jumper from J.R. Camel to gain a three-point lead with 20 seconds left, Northridge's soaring hopes fell as harmlessly as Cross' two desperation 3-pointers at the buzzer.

Northridge, as the sixth and last seed in this tournament, was forced to produce three gutty performances in as many nights - at altitude. A jolt of unconscious energy at the finish was probably too much to expect.

``I'm not one to make excuses,'' said first-year coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy. , ``but I think we wore down a little bit. Playing three good teams in three days will get to you.''

He added: ``We missed some opportunities there at the end. When you're in a championship game, you can't miss opportunities. But from an overall standpoint, I couldn't be more proud of these young men.''

Cross undoubtedly topped that list on this night and in this tournament, despite spending most of the first half on the bench. The diminutive guard out of Reseda High School Reseda High School, established in 1955, is located in the Reseda section of Los Angeles, California, United States.

picked up two fouls within 11 seconds before the game was three minutes old.

Cross scored 21 points, 17 of that after halftime, gunning in 9 of 14 field goals, 3 of 6 from 3-point territory. He was an easy pick for tournament MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Derrick Higgins provided ample support with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, hitting 2 of 3 from behind the 3-point line. Keith Higgins added nine points, six rebounds and two steals, and joined his brother on the all-tournament squad.

CSUN's near-miss with the NCAA Tournament is perhaps all the more remarkable when considered against its backdrop.

The Matadors entered the Big Sky this season having compiled a .317 winning percentage (52-112) in their first six seasons since moving up to Division I in 1990.

This year alone they lost by 22 points to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
and 25 to Iowa before rising up to tweak the noses of some of the conference's best teams in this tournament: top-seeded Northern Arizona and No. 3 Montana State.

``It's a tough loss because the game meant so much to the players, the program, the university, the community,'' said Braswell.
