who's going to score,'' Braswell said last week, hours after his team struggled to consistently accomplish that most-important task in its final exhibition game.

Braswell is pleased with the progress his team has made in learning his pressing style, but he is concerned. The new runnin' Matadors open the season Saturday at UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas , and no one has shown much shooting prowess.

``Defense is the thing that is coming together,'' said Braswell, who begins his first head coaching job after seven years as an assistant at Long Beach State and the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The Matadors return seven players who saw extensive action from last season's 7-20 team, two players who watched from the bench with injuries and another who was not eligible after transferring.

They do not return longtime coach Pete Cassidy, who was fired last spring after 25 years.

``It's a total change,'' Rhoden said.

The two players who were injured, 6-foot-7 forward Kevin Taylor and 6-3 guard Derrick Higgins, are likely starters. The player who was not eligible, 6-5 forward Keith Higgins, is also a potential starter.

Brady Mertes, a 6-8 transfer from Moorpark College, and Cross, a 5-11 point guard who is the only constant, could round out the starting lineup on Saturday.
