CSUN SCORES ON LARGE SCALE; MATADORS BULK UP WITH RECRUITS.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

They wanted to get bigger and stronger where it counted, and they did.

The Cal State Northridge football coaches were satisfied Wednesday afternoon as their football recruits sent in letters of intent, knowing the Matadors will be tougher on the defensive and offensive lines next season.

``We went into this thing with the intention of bolstering our offensive and defensive lines,'' CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  coach Jeff Kearin said. ``We're really happy with the defensive line we signed.''

Northridge got commitments from two heavily recruited defensive linemen who already have college experience: Ramsey Venner Venner is a surname, and may refer to:

``They were recruited at a pretty high level and chose us,'' Kearin said. ``We're really excited to watch them compete.''

The Matadors signed two other Chaffey defensive linemen: Andy Zaldovar (6-3, 275) and Jason Nicastro (6-2, 260). Northridge signed two defensive linemen last year - Highland High's Edwin Reed and Lancaster's Nick Koufos - and neither enrolled.

CSUN also turned to transfers on the offensive line: Andrew Holt, a 6-3, 295-pounder from Idaho, and Brandon Bean (6-3, 280) from Chaffey. Northridge was also in the running for Chaffey's Ed Powell, who signed with Utah State.

``The offensive line, we kind of set our sights pretty high,'' Kearin said, ``and we hit on a couple and missed a couple.''

The Matadors signed six JC transfers, including five from Chaffey. Only three high school players from the region were CSUN signees: Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.
