CSUN PULLS OUT LATE WIN MATADORS EXTEND STREAK TO 6 GAMES CSUN 70, UTAH ST. 67.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Cal State Northridge was in a familiar situation Saturday, staging another second-half comeback.

Utah State, playing its final season in the Big West, seemed primed to finish a stretch of thrilling games at the Northridge Gym with a win. But one Matador matador

fan held a sign a few rows behind the Utah State bench that told the Aggies all they needed to know: ``Matadors rule the second half.''

Who can argue?

They certainly rule the last minute, especially in conference play. Down by as many as nine points in the first half, CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  overcame Utah State 70-67 in front of a season-high crowd of 1,189, with senior guard Davin White making the winning 3-pointer with 52 seconds left.

It was the Matadors' second last-minute win this week. They pulled out a 67-63 victory Thursday over Idaho after Ian Boylan converted a three-point play with 25 seconds left.

CSUN (8-7) has won six consecutive games and are 6-1 in the Big West. They trail only Pacific, which faced visiting Idaho later Saturday. The last time the Matadors started 6-1 was in the 2000-01 season, when they won the Big Sky Conference and played in the NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament can mean:

``We're in good shape, but we're not satisfied just because we're 6-1,'' said White, who scored a team-high 15 points. ``We've got a target on our back. We have to keep working hard in practice.''

Transfer Bakari Altheimer said he would spend extra time in the gym. He hit two consecutive 3-pointers, the second of which pulled CSUN within one point at 55-54 with eight minutes left. He was hot in the second half, but so was Utah State.

The Aggies burned the Matadors on several occasions with easy layups after breaking down CSUN's 1-3-1 zone, and they made solid passes out of traps and found the open man. At one point late, they made five consecutive shots for a 65-59 lead.

The Aggies shot 56 percent for the game and lost. Forward Nate Harris Nate Harris (born March 8, 1983) is an American football linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs.  scored 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting and added five rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two steals. He fouled out with 1:26 left.

It was disappointing for the Aggies, who lost to Pacific in double overtime Thursday. Utah State coach Stew Morrill Stew Morrill (born July 25, 1952, in Provo, Utah, USA) is head coach of the Utah State University men's basketball team. He had previously coached at the University of Montana and Colorado State University before being hired by Utah State in 1998.  called both games heartbreakers, and he took the blame.
