(stinks),'' Rose said after the Matadors dropped a 71-48 season opener at home Saturday night to UC Irvine.

``We beat ourselves up mentally,'' Rose continued. ``We had all the athleticism, all the height, everything we needed to beat this team, but we didn't come ready to play.''

This was supposed to be the big debut of Northridge's so-called twin towers of 6-foot-4 Rose and 6-3 Jennifer Shetters, plus the 6-2 Davis in reserve. Instead, the team showed it's in need of some counseling.

Northridge insisted on trying to force the ball inside, which led to a majority of its 32 turnovers.

``We did a good job keeping them from getting the ball inside to Kristi and Jenny,'' Irvine coach Mark Adams Mark Adams is a college basketball analyst on the ESPN family of networks. Then Northridge tried outside shooting, which contributed to its 34 percent from the field (17 of 50, including 4 of 16 3-pointers).

In the final 5:17 of the first half - the decisive stretch - Northridge missed 11 of 12 shots, including seven 3-pointers, and was outscored 10-2, giving Irvine a 33-22 halftime lead.

``I am completely and totally disappointed,'' Northridge coach Frozena Jerro said. ``I can't think of an aspect of the game we did well in. . . . We had a good week of practice. This is not the same team I saw in practice.''

Rose led all scorers with 18 points, 10 of which came in the second half after Irvine (1-0) had built a 20-point lead. But no one else scored more than eight, and two players committed eight turnovers.

Meanwhile, Irvine, despite a height disadvantage, got 17 points from 5-11 forward Wendy Gabbe, 13 points from 6-1 forward Brandy brandy [for brandywine, from Du.,=burnt, i.e., distilled, wine], strong alcoholic spirit distilled from wine or from marc, the residue of the wine press.
