CSUN NOTEBOOK : BUBB TO BEGIN SERVING SUSPENSION TODAY.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

When it was announced in September that he would be suspended without pay for his involvement in the Shayne Blakey cover-up, Cal State Northridge athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Paul Bubb said he accepted the punishment and hoped it was ``a done deal.''

At last, it may be.

Bubb finally will serve his five-day suspension beginning today, according to according to

``We looked for a convenient time,'' said vice president for student affairs Student affairs staff are responsible for academic advising and support services delivery at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. Saying it was a ``personnel matter,'' Kopita would only confirm Wednesday the suspension will be served by the end of the month. Bubb will lose $1,771 based on his annual salary of $85,008.

Bubb, who was in Nashville, Tenn., this week for the NCAA NCAA

In August, football coach Dave Baldwin Dave Baldwin was the head football coach of San Jose State University from 1997-2000. During his tenure, he had three straight wins over Stanford (including their rosebowl season of 1999). Kopita and Bubb said at the time the suspension would be served when it was best for the department. Bubb just concluded a search for a head football coach.

Thomas gone: Jeramie Thomas, a freshman running back who was likely going to be a defensive back next season, has left Northridge. The speedy Thomas, who gained 92 yards in his first game in place of injured Norman Clarke last season, has enrolled at Garden City (Junior) College in Garden City, Kan.

Thomas, who red-shirted a year at Colorado State before coming to Northridge, is trying to get back to the Division I-A level, said former Northridge assistant Matt Lubick, a friend of the Thomas family.

Nice consolation: Thomas' departure is disappointing to track coach Don Strametz, as well. Thomas won the 55-meter hurdles title at the 1996 Western Athletic Conference The Western Athletic Conference (commonly referred to as the WAC, pronounced "wack") was formed on July 27, 1962, making it the sixth oldest of the 11 college athletic conferences currently participating in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly  Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Strametz will at least have football players Steve Forte and Bryant Eubanks this spring.

Eubanks, an impressive substitute on Northridge's No. 1 400-meter relay team last year, is a contender for the Matadors' top team this season. Fellow cornerback Forte will run sprints. They were members of El Camino (Oceanside) High School's state champion 400-relay team in 1994.

Northridge begins its indoor season Jan. 25 with a four-team meet at Northern Arizona.

Appeal: Baseball coach Mike Batesole said junior third baseman Chris MacMillan is academically ineligible, pending an appeal with the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Batesole said MacMillan, a transfer from Pasadena City College, does not have the required credits because he took a nonqualifying class on the advice of a counselor at Pasadena.

``That's a key to our season,'' Batesole said of the status of MacMillan, expected to bat in the No. 3 spot.

Northridge is asking the Clearinghouse to let the class count based on the fact ``Chris is a good student, he just got bad information,'' Batesole said.

Batesole was discouraged Wednesday. He said he called the NCAA. ``They hadn't heard anything about the case,'' he said.

New job: Cal State Northridge marketing director Terri Pearson has accepted the job as assistant softball coach at Tennessee. Pearson, a senior on the Matadors' 1994 NCAA runner-up team, begins her new job Saturday. The Volunteers play at Northridge on March 29.
