CSUN NOTEBOOK : BALDWIN'S STOCK HAS SOARED IN VALUE.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

The thought has occurred to Cal State Northridge athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Paul Bubb that if football coach Dave Baldwin Dave Baldwin was the head football coach of San Jose State University from 1997-2000. During his tenure, he had three straight wins over Stanford (including their rosebowl season of 1999).  else.

What Baldwin has done in his second year is take a program that was 9-21 in its first three seasons in Division I-AA to its first winning record since 1990 and just its 13th winning season in 35 years. The Matadors won at then-No. 22 Weber State, pushed No. 6 Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim.  would make the Matadors 7-4 and make Baldwin a candidate for Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year.

Baldwin did this with his first recruiting class. He did this after a 2-8 campaign in his first season. He did this, coincidentally, in the final year of a two-year contract.

Bubb said before the season that Baldwin likely would be asked back regardless of what happened this year. Around Northridge people are wondering how long he will stick around his alma mater. Bubb and Baldwin talked last week about Baldwin returning.

``I'm hoping we can have him here for some time to help us get where we want to be in the Big Sky Conference,'' Bubb said.

Baldwin, who earned $63,540 this year, wants to build this program. His family is happy in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

Bubb said Baldwin would likely be offered a multiyear contract in line with the three-year pacts given men's basketball coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  in May and baseball coach Mike Batesole in July.

Looking good: It won't be known for some time how good they will be, but the five high school seniors who have committed to play basketball for Braswell have impressed observers.

``This is the first time in a long time that they've got some great high school kids,'' said David Pump of the California Cage Report. ``. . . For them to sign these kids early and get this quality of kids is impressive.''

But about this season . . .: The Northridge men's basketball team has been picked to finish seventh in the Big Sky by the conference's coaches and media. The Matadors women were picked seventh by the coaches and ninth (last) by the media.

Both the Montana men and women were picked as the conference's top teams by the coaches and media.

Don't panic: College basketball teams are not supposed to lose exhibitions. So eyebrows were raised when the women's team squandered squan·der

Coach Michael Abraham, though, wasn't worried.

``We're so much better than last year,'' Abraham said.
