CSUN NOTEBOOK; SHOW KEARIN THE MONEY; BUDGET WORRIES HEAD COACH.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

Although Jeff Kearin is well-educated - he has a B.A. in business administration and he graduated from the Whittier College The liberal arts university was founded in 1887 by members of the Religious Society of Friends, who named it after Friends (Quaker) poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Student athletes at Whittier College are known today as the Poets in his honor.  School of Law in 1987 - what he really needs is a good accountant.

Only a few weeks after he signed a four-year contract to become the head football coach at Cal State Northridge, Kearin is looking at a payroll problem that could affect the Matadors in seasons to come.

Because the university recently signed former coaches Keith Borges and Craig Wall to one-year contracts, Kearin says he doesn't have enough money in the till to pay every assistant what he believes they are worth.

``That is a big reason why (quarterbacks coach) Aaron Flowers had to take the job he had to take,'' Kearin said, ``because I had no money to pay him, at least until July. Now, with what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Released on May 21, 1971 (see 1971 in music), What's Going On reflected the beginning of a new trend in soul music. , I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Flowers, a former record-setting quarterback at CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  who in two years established himself as a rising young coach, went to Montana State in mid-December because MSU MSU Michigan State University
MSU Mississippi State University

MSU Minnesota State University
MSU Morehead State University (Kentycky)
MSU Montclair State University
offered him $40,000 per year, about four times what he was paid last season at Northridge.

``We took our spring payroll budget and front-ended it so I could get through the season,'' Kearin said, ``based on all the other obligations . . . that I inherited.''

Rob Phenicie, an assistant who resigned last summer, also received a severance package A severance package is pay and benefits an employee receives when they leave employment at a company. In addition to the employee's remaining regular pay, it may include some of the following:

.

Also taken from payroll were the salaries received by Borges and Wall, who did not coach.

``There are guys working here every day, 16 hours a day, who are not being paid, or who are being paid very, very little,'' said Kearin, whose contract calls for a salary near $95,000 per year. ``My intention was to see where the staff was going to be this spring, and then at the beginning of the new fiscal year in July, as far as a payroll situation, create the staff.''

--Planned summit: Kearin wants to meet with Borges and Wall, but so far, he says, his efforts to reach them have been fruitless.

``I've been instructed by (athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic ) Dick Dull, who was instructed by the university's lawyers,'' he said, ``that these two are ready and willing to come back to work and wanting to get going as soon as possible.

``I've asked to meet with them after next week, to talk about what exactly their intentions are and how we're going to make the staff up. I have never once told them they can't work here. I've never talked to them. I've yet to lay eyes on them.''

--Big West update: The Big West Council met Sunday afternoon in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  to discuss possible expansion in the 2001-'02 school year, when the conference could lose New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S).  State and North Texas.

Dennis Farrell, the Big West commissioner, said last week the only schools being discussed for possible inclusion in the future are CSUN and UC Riverside.

When the conference decides to take the step and forward a recommendation to its member-school presidents - who have the ultimate vote - is up in the air.

``I'm still hoping for some time in January, maybe the first week of February,'' Farrell said. ``If everything appears to be on target, we're probably going to need to get (the presidents) together anyway.''

--Getting comfortable: Marco McCain slept through most of the CSUN men's basketball flight from Salt Lake City to L.A. on Sunday afternoon. How could he be restless?

McCain, a junior guard who led Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. It was named after Rancho Los Cerritos, a ranch that served prominently in the region in the 19th century.  to the state JC championship last year, had his best game as a Matador matador

on Saturday night in Northridge's 101-86 win at Idaho State.

Entering the game with a paltry 2.5-points-per-game average, McCain had a game-high 19 points. He made three of his five 3-point attempts, including one falling away in the corner that drew a chorus of ooohs from the CSUN bench.

``I've been sticking with my game,'' McCain said. ``I didn't put my head down.''

It was an important triumph for McCain, who came into the game averaging 15 minutes per game. He was suspended by CSUN coach Bobby Braswell for the St. Francis game on Dec. 28 for what Braswell called ``conduct unbecoming a Matador'' in the team's previous game.
