CSUN NOTEBOOK: WANTED: FANS AT CSUN GYM.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

They feel they've done their part, now they feel students should do their part.

The Cal State Northridge men's basketball team is longing for fan support. The Matadors know their digs aren't that cool - heck, plenty of high school gyms are nicer than the Northridge Gym - but they're banking that students will want to pack the place to see a program on the rise.

They hope interest starts today, when CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (2-1) plays host to Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:
  • California Polytechnic State University, located in San Luis Obispo, California (Cal Poly)
  • California State Polytechnic University, Pomona located in Pomona, California (Cal Poly Pomona)
 Pomona (2-0) at 7:05 p.m.

``I feel we'll probably start getting a lot more people,'' senior center Brian Heinle said. ``Hopefully, people will have to fight now to get into games. I'd love to see that. Maybe we'll put a television in the lobby.''

The television in the lobby is a stretch, but Heinle's expectations for a sellout crowd aren't. After all, the gym has a capacity of just 1,600.

CSUN's historic 78-74 win over UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

It is home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams. The men's and women's volleyball teams also play here.  last week should increase attendance. The ticket office received calls for season tickets the following day.

The Matadors shouldn't expect a sellout for today's game against the Broncos, a Division II program, but they do expect to see fewer empty seats. A win over UCLA and a one-point loss to Nevada Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday should be enough to attract attention.

--No big deal: Apparently, 71 of the 72 voting members decided the Matadors' victory over UCLA wasn't significant or historic enough to include CSUN on their ballots (although enough failed to vote for UCLA, dropping the Bruins out).

Just one person voted for CSUN: George Geise, sports editor Noun 1. sports editor - the newspaper editor responsible for sports news

Tribune. He placed the Matadors 13th, giving them 13 points in this week's poll.

Geise's explanation: ``I just felt like their winning at UCLA, and I know they're overwhelming favorites in this league, and no one gives the Big Sky any credit.''

--Early birds: CSUN will leave for the Blue & Gold Coca-Cola Classic in Milwaukee on Wednesday instead of Thursday. Braswell decided to leave a day early to avoid possible delays because of predicted snow. CSUN plays Kent State on Friday.
