CSUN NOTEBOOK: WAC REJECTS BASEBALL.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

When Paul Bubb was Cal State Northridge's athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic , he petitioned the Big West Conference each season in an effort to gain affiliate membership for the Matadors baseball team.

Bubb's replacement might have to take the same action because the Western Athletic Conference The Western Athletic Conference (commonly referred to as the WAC, pronounced "wack") was formed on July 27, 1962, making it the sixth oldest of the 11 college athletic conferences currently participating in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly  chose last week not to offer a spot to CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge . Instead, University of Hawaii-Hilo athletic director Bill Trumbo did some serious politicking on behalf of his team to earn the invitation.

Trumbo's maneuver paid off when, during a conference call last week, the WAC WAC (Women's Army Corps), U.S. army organization created (1942) during World War II to enlist women as auxiliaries for noncombatant duty in the U.S. army. Before 1943 it was known as the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC). Its first director was Oveta Culp Hobby.  voted to ask Hawaii-Hilo into the league. WAC associate commissioner Jeffrey Hurd said Hawaii-Hilo accepted the invitation pending university approval.

``(Trumbo) did make some phone calls to our athletic directors to pitch his case and to ask for support,'' Hurd said. ``(Bubb) never called. (Hawaii-Hilo) sent us a letter a couple months ago saying they were interested.''

CSUN, a member of the WAC from 1993-96, plays as an independent. Hurd said no one from CSUN called him regarding potential membership.

Bubb said previously the school was interested in pursuing an allegiance with the WAC but would wait to hear from the league.

The conference's athletic directors voted not to make changes to the current plan while they discuss ways to cut staging costs because many schools would lose money if they hosted the tournament. The topic is expected to be on the agenda for the ADs' January meetings.

Coaches wanted to play the conference tournament at a neutral site, but the proposal was voted down.
