This is the first time in recent memory the Matadors have signed such a high-profile player from out of the area. Coach Jeff Campbell Jeff Campbell (Born August 25, 1979) is a New Zealand soccer player who has represented his country at U20, U23 and senior levels.

The attacking midfielder made his debut for the All Whites against Jamaica in January 2000 and collected 13 caps (5 goals).

Newport Harbor coach Dan Glenn knows why Tramblie picked CSUN. Tramblie is just six feet, making him too small for other coaches. Only Long Beach State and UC Santa Cruz Santa Cruz, city, United States

``Other schools shy away, and Northridge has a history of using smaller setters and succeeding,'' Glenn said.

Glenn said Tramblie, who couldn't be reached, also wanted to play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation is a college athletic conference whose member teams are located in the western United States. ``He's going to make an impact immediately and do a nice job,'' Glenn said.

Soccer signings: Aaron Benditson, a former Oak Park soccer standout, will transfer from Sacramento State to play for the Matadors this fall.

Benditson wasn't able to be reached and Northridge coach Terry Davila couldn't comment, but Benditson's brother, Ben, confirmed the move.

``He's coming back,'' Ben said. ``He just decided a few weeks ago, so it's pretty new information.''

Also, Long Beach Poly forward Brent Whitfield, who led the Jackrabbits to the Southern Section title, has committed to the Matadors; and forward Blu Murray, from Notre Dame High, will walk on.

Camp canceled: The men's basketball camp, scheduled for the Activity Center, has been canceled because a water main broke and flooded the floor.

Brad Enright, the outgoing camp director, said there was a lot of interest in the camp.

``I was getting calls everyday,'' Enright said. ``I got three calls today (Monday).''
