CSUN NOTEBOOK: SUPPORT OFFERED BY 5TH-GRADER.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Cal State Northridge Northridge is the name of some places in the United States of America:
  • Northridge, Los Angeles, California, a community in California's San Fernando Valley
  • California State University, Northridge
coach Jeff Kearin has had a lot to say concerning last week's recommendation that the football program be eliminated. Yet on Wednesday morning, he was speechless speech·less

Kearin took a group of players on their weekly visit to Erwin Elementary in Van Nuys. They normally participate in sports activities and talk to children. Kearin was floored by the gesture of a 10-year-old boy.

``This kid said, 'Hey, I'd like to donate money so they don't cut football,' '' Kearin said. ``This kid probably doesn't have two cents to rub together and he wants to donate his allowance. I can't get millionaires to donate money.''

Kearin told the fifth-grader he could support the team by going to the next - and final - home game against Sacramento State on Nov. 3. CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  plays at UC Davis on Saturday.

Ron Redmond, the father of defensive lineman Lineman or linesman may refer to:

  • Wichita Lineman
Chance Redmond, pledged his support to Kearin and spoke to the team after Wednesday's practice. Redmond, who works in the financial-services industry, asked every player to write a bio about himself.

``We'll give them to anybody and everybody - the president, chancellor, press, legislators and celebrities,'' Redmond said. ``Football is more than just the score on the scoreboard. It's more than X's and O's. It's about the opportunity for kids.''

Their student council has a special meeting - dedicated to discussing the recommendation to drop football - at 1 p.m. today in the Pasadena Room of the student union.

``It's good that someone's looking at us,'' he said.

--Injury report: Defensive lineman Jason Nicastro, who broke his right foot during the first game of the season, was back at Wednesday's practice. It was his first practice, although limited, in about six weeks.

Nicastro said he considered using a medical redshirt red·shirt

and transferring, if CSUN drops the program.

``I'm graduating in May and I didn't want to leave the rest of my teammates down,'' he said.

Fullback Ruben Gomez (knee), linebacker Pieter Keus (knee) and Ben Lorier (linebacker) will not play Saturday.

--Suspensions: Redshirt freshman quarterback Jermaine Guinyard and redshirt freshman receiver Marvin Henderson are not practicing and will not make the trip to UC Davis. Kearin said they were suspended sus·pend
