CSUN NOTEBOOK: SHOCKED MCCAIN GETS BUSY AFTER GETTING CALL.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Marco McCain was prepared to make himself comfortable on the Cal State Northridge bench Saturday. When CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  called his name during a first-half timeout, McCain was a little shocked.

``I thought I wasn't going to play at all,'' McCain said. ``I looked over at one of my teammates and just went on from there.''

McCain's performance didn't reflect his surprise. McCain made 6 of 9 shots and scored 15 points to help CSUN beat Idaho State 90-73 at the Northridge gym.

Braswell suspended McCain indefinitely last week for failing to meet team academic standards. McCain, who started for CSUN (10-7, 3-1) its first two Big Sky Conference games, didn't travel for Thursday's game against Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. In the West lies the Grand Canyon, which was cut by the flow of the Colorado River while the land slowly rose around it. .

Northern Arizona beat CSUN 76-75 on a 3-pointer with eight seconds left. McCain's presence on the defensive end was missed.

``I apologized to the team,'' McCain said. ``I felt bad when I saw the score. I felt I let them down. I told them I was sorry I couldn't be there, but I got it all straightened out.''

McCain is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 7.5 points per game. He's shooting 45 percent from the field, including 42 percent on 3-pointers.

--Mixing it up: Braswell used 12 players in Saturday's victory, giving Brian Heinle, Markus Carr, John Burrell John Buster Burrell (born November 22, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas) was an American football wide receiver in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Washington Redskins. ``We've probably got enough bodies to (substitute),'' Braswell said. ``I probably got in a little rut just sticking a little bit too much with our main guys and not giving some guys a chance to play.

--Projections: For the first time this season, a publication chose a team other than CSUN to win the Big Sky title. The Sporting News picked Montana State (11-5, 3-0) in its latest poll. . . .
