CSUN NOTEBOOK: QB AIMS TO REGAIN HIS AIM.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

The start to Marcus Brady's career was so surreal sur·re·al
adj.
1. Having qualities attributed to or associated with surrealism: "Even with most facilities shut down ...
there was no way it could continue without interruption through the season.

Brady, a redshirt freshman, is learning such now. Though he's thrown 18 touchdowns, Brady also has nine interceptions and hasn't played particularly well lately.

``I think I feel the pressure a little bit, especially as the season winds down,'' Brady said after Thursday's practice. ``We started off winning, then we lost two games, but now we have another shot at the conference title and the playoffs and I don't want to mess it up.''

Early in the season, Brady's accuracy was uncanny - whether it was on the timing patterns, crossing routes or deep balls. But in last week's win against Portland State, Brady underthrew two deep balls that were intercepted and missed several reads. And prior to a solid effort at Weber State, Brady threw three second-half interceptions in a loss to Montana State.

``I may be thinking too much lately,'' said Brady, who is 193 for 292 and 2,196 yards. ``I'm usually at my best when I'm scrambling around and getting out of the pocket.''

Hosting bid in: CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  might have another home game after all. Matadors coach Ron Ponciano said the school put in a bid to host a first-round game in the Division I-AA playoffs - providing the Matadors qualify. And the chances for a home game appear likely.``We were told by (Big Sky commissioner) Doug Fullerton that if we win the next two games, he could almost guarantee us we'll get to host a game,'' Ponciano said. ``I think that would be neat.''

A school hosting a first-round game must guarantee $30,000 to the NCAA NCAA

But a change in Big Sky philosophy will also aid conference teams readying for the playoffs. Beginning in 2000, the Big Sky will end its conference season by mid-November.

First downs: Ponciano said he didn't hear from doctors so linebacker Cos Abercrombie (broken jaw) won't make the trip. . . . Nose guard Sean Beard limps noticeably and won't travel.
