CSUN NOTEBOOK: PUMPS WANT TO HELP PUT CSUN ON RADIO.

Byline: Marc J. Spears Daily News Staff Writer

David and Dana Pump, twin brothers with strong national ties to high school and college basketball College basketball most often refers to the American basketball competitive governance structure established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA. History

, said Thursday they want to help put the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team on radio.

The Pumps, both Northridge residents and ex-CSUN students, run a scouting service, have a series of high-level camps and tournaments, had two traveling men's exhibition teams this season and run clinics for players and coaches.

They have spoken to CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Paul Bubb about raising funds for the project, which would air on KCSN/88.5 FM, through sponsorships with Adidas, Kinko's copy centers and Chili's restaurants.

CSUN athletic director Paul Bubb has said there is no money in the budget to put basketball games on radio this season. He estimated that CSUN broadcasts for just Big Sky Conference games would cost at least $25,000.

``If KCSN is interested in getting the games on, we will do everything to help and (the Pumps) can, too,'' Bubb said. ``If all fell into place, we would be interested in having the games on the radio.''

With the brothers' influence on local basketball, questions have been raised whether they present a conflict of interest with CSUN. Calls to the NCAA NCAA

Bubb, who spoke to Dana Pump on Thursday, said the possibility is too hypothetical to comment on right now. Bubb, however, did say he was interested in the possibility and would talk to the NCAA about it if talks became serious.

``I don't want money and it is not a conflict of interest at all,'' Dana Pump said. ``The gesture is that we basically want to help and get it rolling. Nobody else is stepping up.''

KCSN general manager Rene Engel, who is out of town on vacation until Dec. 10 and was unavailable Thursday, would be in charge of putting together a possible deal.

``They are (former students) of the school and they know the game,'' Bubb said. ``I never heard them on radio, but I wouldn't rule them out.''

David said, ``I've done spots on sports radio Sports radio (or sports talk radio) is a radio format devoted entirely to discussion and broadcasting of sporting events. Northridge needs radio and it's a joke that they don't have it.''

Football news: CSUN football coach Jim Fenwick plans to sign four or five junior college players on or after Dec. 15, the first day of the signing period. He hopes to get offensive and defensive linemen, linebackers and possibly a quarterback.

``We're still trying to get to know the pool available and see who falls through,'' Fenwick said. ``It is hard because we have to make constant evaluations and we don't have much money.''

Fenwick said that offensive lineman Jake Brinton is planning to graduate this spring with a degree in psychology and will not return next season. The reserve lineman also might join the Peace Corps. . . . Bubb said CSUN could know today about a Division I-A opponent to fill the open Sept. 5 slot on the 1998 football schedule.
