Byline: Marc J. Spears Daily News Staff Writer

Ron Ponciano, Cal State Northridge's new football coach, said he plans to hire his last two full-time assistants by Monday.

Ponciano expects to interview up to five candidates for the running backs and defensive coordinator/outside linebacker coaching positions this week.

Candidates include Merced College offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during  Keith Borges, Crown College (Minn.) coach Craig Wall, Cal graduate assistant Chris Hadley and former CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  assistant Foster Anderson.

``These guys are real strong candidates,'' Ponciano said.

Ponciano also expects to hire limited-earnings and part-time coaches. Two include graduate assistant coach Brent Huff Brent Huff (Born 1961), is an actor, writer, director, and acting teacher. Brent's works as an actor include The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak, I Spy Returns , who will be retained as the cornerbacks coach, while Aaron Flowers, CSUN's all-time passing leader, is expected to be the graduate-assistant quarterbacks coach.

the two best teams in the Big Sky Conference (Weber State and Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. In the West lies the Grand Canyon, which was cut by the flow of the Colorado River while the land slowly rose around it. ) and definitely the two worst teams (Sacramento State and Idaho State) to finish the season.

Up first on Thursday night is Weber State (11-11, 9-3), which is tied for first with Northern Arizona.

``Weber State is in first place, and it is a big game for us,'' Braswell said. ``This is a big challenge that we're looking forward to.''

The Matadors sit in seventh place in the Big Sky, but they are almost a lock to gain one of the six teams seeded for the Big Sky Tournament, hosted by the league's regular-season champion from March 5-7.

In the nine-team league, Sacramento State (0-12 Big Sky) and Idaho State (2-12) aren't likely to surpass CSUN, and Portland State (8-4) isn't eligible for postseason play until next year.

Tolson honored again: CSUN shot putter Christina Tolson was named the Big Sky women's track and field athlete of the week for the third week in a row. Last weekend in Reno, Nev., she was 2.25 inches from qualifying for an automatic NCAA NCAA

Women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  update: With four regular-season games remaining in Big Sky play, the Matadors (11-11, 7-5) are in third place. Montana (12-1 Big Sky) and Northern Arizona (11-1) own first and second place, while Idaho State (7-7) is in fourth. The Matadors have never had more than eight conference wins in the 23 previous years of the program.

Filling the holes: At the beginning of the season, CSUN's beleaguered be·lea·guer

baseball program looked for players to plug gaping holes left by departing players. Now the Matadors (9-6), winners of four in a row and eight of their last 10, are finding them.

The pitching, especially in the bullpen, is coach Mike Batesole's most pleasant surprise. Jim DeBiase and Jeff Martin Jeff Martin is the name of:

have shown well, and now-established closer Brad Foss is 4 for 4 in save situations.

In the field, 1997 spot-players like Mike McNeely are also contributing. The infielder/outfielder had three home runs Sunday against Albertson and leads the team in slugging percentage In baseball statistics, slugging percentage (abbreviated SLG) is the most popular measure of the power of a hitter. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats:  (1.036) and runs batted in (19).

``It's been different guys on different days,'' said Batesole, whose team plays in the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament Feb 20-22. ``Those are the things you always hear about national-caliber teams.''
