CSUN NOTEBOOK: PLAYING `D' HELPS HEINLE.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

Just when his teammates needed him most, Brian Heinle turned to a part of his game for which he's not well known.

Heinle, Cal State Northridge's center and the team's leading scorer, gave an impact performance on defense in the last 10 minutes of the Matadors' 79-78 victory over Portland State last weekend. The 6-foot-10 junior had two steals and a block, inspiring CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  to rally from 17 points down with 7 1/2 minutes left.

``Brian Heinle played the best defensive game of his career here and his life,'' CSUN coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  said. ``He was blocking shots, denying ball reversals, getting steals. He was just phenomenal.''

Heinle scored a team-high 19 points and he made 8 of 14 shots. But he elevated his play offensively only after he became a force on the other end.

``If I can rebound and defend, everything else will come,'' Heinle said. ``That's where I was trying to put all my energy, into the defensive end.''

CSUN (16-9, 8-6) has two games left in the regular season, starting with tonight's crucial game against Weber State (17-8, 9-5) at Matador matador
