CSUN NOTEBOOK: NCAA SAYS NO TO APPEAL IN GREEN CASE.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

The NCAA NCAA
abbr.
National Collegiate Athletic Association
made its decision Thursday, ending senior linebacker Kaleon Green's college career.

Although he hasn't read the report, which denies Green's appeal for a sixth year of eligibility, Cal State Northridge interim head coach Jeff Kearin is puzzled by the action.

``I really thought the whole case was compelling,'' Kearin said after the Matadors finished a one-hour practice at Kansas' Memorial Stadium. ``I haven't seen the report . . . it's disappointing because (Green) is a good player and a good person.''

Green appealed for the extra season of eligibility because he sat out the 1995 season at West Los Angeles College WLAC is a part of the California Community Colleges system, within the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), and fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges[1].  after showing symptoms of a relapse of a rare form of cancer for which he was treated in 1992.

``I'm really more disappointed for him than for us,'' Kearin said.

Green, who started two games for CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  in '97 and then sat out all of last season after breaking his leg, hadn't practiced for almost three weeks before being declared ineligible. He played well enough in fall camp to be considered a starter.

``It hurts,'' linebackers coach A Linebackers Coach is a coach in charge of the Linebackers in American Football. This position is very common in the NFL and college football programs. The coach is part of the defense, which is lead by the Defensive Coordinator.  Terrance Johnson said, ``but we still have guys who can step into (Green's) role.''

for today's game against the Jayhawks. Miller is academically ineligible and didn't make the trip.

``We could have taken a chance and worked some magic in the morning,'' Kearin said. ``But then we would have had to take a guy off the travel list.''

On the air: Today's game will be heard on campus-based KCSN-FM, with Doug Jacques doing the play-by-play.

Even though athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Dick Dull and interim university president Louanne Kennedy could not negotiate with KCSN to broadcast all 11 Matadors games, a deal was struck to do away games.

``They both decided that radio needed to happen,'' CSUN sports information director Ryan Finney said.

Weather report: A high of 85 degrees is expected in Lawrence today, with the possibility of thunderstorms thunderstorms

a storm characterized by thunder and lightning caused by strong rising air currents; identified as agents of animal disease because of their involvement causing (1) spasmodic colic; (2) lightning strike; (3) injuries of cattle acquired in stampedes initiated by storms.
