CSUN NOTEBOOK: MATADORS LOSE TWO OFFENSIVE LINEMEN.

Another day, another injury. So it goes for the Cal State Northridge football team.

Offensive lineman Aschon Madjid is the latest victim of a season-ending injury. Madjid, an L.A. Baptist High product, broke his foot in Tuesday's practice. CSUN coach Jeff Kearin learned Wednesday afternoon that his left guard is through for the year.

Also, senior offensive lineman Keith Kincaid, who made 35 consecutive starts, is probably out for the year. Kincaid had offseason surgery on his left shoulder and practiced sparingly but played in the season opener at Northern Arizona.

Kincaid's pain was so severe that he hasn't practiced since the game on Aug. 30. The Matadors have 10 games left and are looking to fill six positions that opened because of injury and one because of a player who quit.

``I don't know what to do,'' coach Jeff Kearin said. ``Just get the next guy ready. I don't have an answer. Seven guys who started our only game and they're either not going to play or are hurt right now.''

Not only is it seven guys, it's seven starters.

Defensive lineman Jason Nicastro broke his foot at the end of the NAU game and defensive back Travis Campbell injured his shoulder in CSUN's final fall scrimmage. Campbell played through the injury but after the first game decided to have surgery.

Linebacker Cos Abercrombie had minor knee surgery last week but could be ready to play Saturday, when CSUN plays at Stephen F. Austin (Texas). Receiver Jamal Perry is nursing a shoulder injury and receiver Jason Stone quit last week.

Madjid, a sophomore, had blossomed into one of CSUN's best offensive lineman.

``He was just running around doing a play out in the open field on a screen and hit a (defensive back),'' Kearin said. ``Somebody stepped on his foot or something and he broke it. We said we couldn't lose offensive or defensive lineman and we've lost three for the year.''

CSUN cannot afford to lose players because it has only 45 scholarships, making depth a problem.

Kearin wasn't sure who will start in place of Madjid.

And then there's the loss of Kincaid, who plays at left guard.

``At this point, I'd say he's probably done for the year,'' Kearin said. ``He hasn't practiced. He can redshirt at this point, medically. This is the cutoff. He doesn't feel he's ready to go.''

--Ready or not: CSUN will have had a 22-day hiatus from its season opener until Saturday's game. The Matadors played Aug. 30, had a bye and then had Saturday's game against Southwest Texas State canceled because of the terrorist attacks.

``To me, it's certainly a different dynamic than we've ever had to deal with,'' Kearin said. ``I kind of feel like an NFL team that's getting ready for the Super Bowl with a few weeks off. Initially, my thoughts were that it would be somewhat of a disguised blessing because I thought we'd get some (injured) guys back. That kind of went out the window. But we've had some time to work on some stuff.''
