CSUN NOTEBOOK: MATADORS KNOW NOT TO GET CARELESS.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

POCATELLO, Ida. - One loss is all it will take for the Cal State Northridge basketball team to fall back to second place in the Big Sky Conference.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (15-8, 4-2) holds only a half-game lead over Weber State.

``I think if we lose a game, we're giving somebody else a chance to win the conference,'' guard John Burrell John Buster Burrell (born November 22, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas) was an American football wide receiver in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Washington Redskins. He played college football for Rice University.  said. ``We have to win every game. We can't lose any. We don't want to give anybody else opportunities. We want to win this outright - no sharing, no nothing.''

CSUN, which has won four consecutive games and six of its last seven, plays sixth-place Idaho State (8-11, 4-4) tonight at Holt Arena Holt Arena is an indoor multi-purpose athletic stadium located on the campus of Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. It is the home field of the Idaho State Bengals of the Big Sky Conference and sits at an elevation of 4560 feet (1390 m) above sea level. . Then it has nine days off before facing fifth-place Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. Northern Arizona is one of two teams in the conference to beat CSUN. And, while the Matadors whipped Idaho State 90-73 last month, the Bengals have improved. At least that's what a victory over Northern Arizona last week seems to indicate.

``You know what's amazing is that they've only played two (conference) home games,'' CSUN coach Bobby Braswell said of Idaho State. ``Six of their first eight were on the road. They are definitely a much-improved basketball team. They played NAU (1) (Network Access Unit) An interface card that adapts a computer to a local area network.

``They're shooting the ball well right now and that will be a key thing for us - taking away their shooters.''

and UCLA beat then-No. 1 Stanford last week. So does it follow that CSUN would beat Stanford?

``My pastor announced it at all the services on Sunday,'' Braswell said. ``He said, `I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

how many of you saw the game yesterday but the UCLA Bruins beat the No. 1 team in the nation, Stanford. And Cal State Northridge beat UCLA, so that makes Cal State Northridge No. 1 in the nation.'

``Everyone started laughing and clapping and everything.''

If nothing else, UCLA's victory over Stanford certainly helps Northridge in the power rankings.

CSUN vs. IDAHO STATE

Tipoff 6:35 p.m., at Holt Arena.

TV/Radio Internet broadcast at www.GoMatadors.com.

CSUN (15-8, 8-2) update: The Matadors had a week off after a 96-86 win at home over Weber State. The victory kept CSUN in first place in the Big Sky Conference, a half-game ahead of Eastern Washington (12-8, 7-3). The Matadors have won four in a row and six of their last seven games.

Idaho State (8-11, 4-4) update: The Bengals are much improved, though inconsistent, since they last played the Matadors. They posted an impressive 70-63 win over Northern Arizona last week in Flagstaff Flagstaff, city (1990 pop. 45,857), seat of Coconino co., N Ariz., near the San Francisco Peaks; inc. 1894. Lumbering, ranching, and a lively tourist trade thrive in the region, where many ruined pueblos, numerous state parks, several lakes, and large pine forests  but lost to Portland State (4-6 Big Sky) the game before. Idaho State is in sixth place in the Big Sky and six teams qualify for the Big Sky tournament.

PEPPERDINE vs. SAN DIEGO

Tipoff: 7 p.m., at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Jenny Craig Pavilion, built in 2000, is a 5,100 seat, multi-purpose arena in San Diego, California, named after the weight-loss entrepreneur Jenny Craig. It is the home of the University of San Diego Toreros. .

TV/Radio: None.

Pepperdine (15-6, 7-1) update: The Waves open a crucial four-game trip tonight, with the outcome likely deciding their chance to win the West Coast Conference title. They move on to Santa Clara on Saturday, then travel to Portland (Feb. 15) and Gonzaga (Feb. 17). Gonzaga handed Pepperdine its only WCC WCC n abbr (= World Council of Churches) → COE m (Conseil œcuménique des Églises)

San Diego (12-9, 4-4) update: This clearly wasn't the type of season the Toreros expected after returning seven of their top scorers from last year and being touted as potential WCC champions. Nevertheless, they're tough at home and have the ability to hamper the Waves' plans with a victory.
