CSUN NOTEBOOK: MATADORS DON'T PANIC WHEN OFFENSE GOES SOUTH.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Cal State Northridge appears to have gained at least one benefit from enduring countless scoring droughts this season: poise.

When CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  fell behind 19-2 to start its game against Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  on Thursday, neither players nor coaches panicked.

Really.

``We've been through that quite a bit. This young basketball team is probably used to that,'' Braswell said. ``The fact that we got down - I never felt we were out of it. That didn't have an effect on us whatsoever.''

The Matadors rebounded so well from the 17-point deficit that they had a two-point lead by halftime. CSUN (3-10) couldn't overcome a 29-percent shooting performance and lost 57-54 to fall to 2-2 in the Big West Conference.

If the Matadors are experienced in one thing, it's dealing with lapses. Early in the season, CSUN allowed a 20-0 run against Nevada. It hasn't been that bad since, but it has been bad. Yet, it never seems to faze the Matadors.

``Our offense wasn't slow, but again, your shots aren't always going to fall,'' freshman Ian Boylan said. ``We use our defense to get us back in games.''

The fullcourt press and zone defenses have proven to be stifling - CSUN had 11 steals Thursday. But getting rid of those lapses would be even more effective.

, the team's leading scorer, has had his off nights, as evidenced by his 3-for-18 shooting and scoreless second half (0 for 10) Thursday. But there hasn't been a Matador matador

to emerge as another go-to player.

``I know (Carr) is quite disappointed with that,'' Braswell said. ``That's the hardest part - he's got to go home and live with that. We need him to make shots for us, but we've got to have some other people step up. I've said that all along - Markus can't carry the whole offensive load for us. We've got to get other people stepping up. I just thought we weren't aggressive enough offensively.''

--TV time: CSUN has five televised games this season. The Matadors, who made their debut on Fox Sports Net 2 Thursday, will be on KDOC-TV today. It is only the second time CSUN has had back-to-back televised games at the Northridge Gym. Last year, CSUN had consecutive TV games on ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network 2 for the Big Sky Tournament semifinals and finals.

CSUN (3-10, 2-2) update: It certainly can't get any worse on offense for the Matadors, who shot 29 percent from the field in a 57-54 loss Thursday to UC Santa Barbara. Guard Markus Carr was held to 3-for-18 shooting. Freshman guard Curtis Slaughter slaughter

Cal Poly SLO (9-4, 3-2) update: Cal Poly lost to Pacific 70-54 on Thursday. The Mustangs had nearly as much trouble from the floor as the Matadors, shooting just 34 percent.
